WOW Air, the airline famous for $99 fares from Boston and Baltimore to Iceland, will begin flying from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Iceland in summer 2016. These will be the fifth and sixth North American destination for WOW Air, and it has over a dozen more in Europe.

Tickets will go on sale in January 2016, and I’m willing to bet we will see some very low introductory fares, possible $99 one way like we regularly see on the much shorter flights from Baltimore and Boston.

To fly the longer flights, WOW Air will introduce its first widebody plane, an A330. The plane will have 342 seats in an all economy configuration. Standard pitch will be 30″, 1-2″ less legroom than most domestic economy, but you can pay extra to get up to 34″ of pitch.

This is amazing news for Californians, even those who are too stuck up for a low-cost carrier, because WOW Air’s entry into a market tends to cause prices to tumble.

Iceland is at the top of the list of countries I want to visit, and I hope to have a chance in 2016 or 2017. Right now, there is no good way to use traditional miles to get there. (Hopefully that changes if the Alaska/Icelandair partnership expands to allow redemptions.) The best deal is to use 9,900 Arrival miles for a one way flight on WOW Air when it offers $99 fares.
